Flash memory cards are not being detected by the internal reader on my computer. Why?

Some internal card readers do not support higher capacity cards (e.g., 64GB or 512GB). Many systems, including newer ones with built in card readers, are made to support cards up to a limited capacity. The capacity of your card may exceed this limitation and a firmware upgrade from the computer manufacturer may be necessary. Check with your computer manufacturer for hardware/software fixes.
If you have a digital camera or an external card reader that supports the flash card in question, try connecting one of these devices to the computer. If you can successfully view the card via the external device, the problem may exist with your built in reader.

If my device supports standard MMC, will the MMC Plus be compatible?

Yes, the MMC Plus solutions are backwards compatible to the standard MMC Host devices.

Question 3

I am copying files to my flash memory and get an error message stating, "The directory or file cannot be created." The total size of all files is less than the capacity of the card. Why?

Accepted Answer

FAT32 file system has a single file size limitation of 3.99GB. In order to transfer a single file to the card that is larger than 3.99GB, you will need to reformat the card using the exFAT file system. Once this is done, you can transfer larger files to the flash card.

Note: Make sure the device you plan to use the card with, supports exFAT file system.

Question 4

My flash card is not seen by my device or shows a card error in the device, but it works OK in another device. Why?

Accepted Answer

Depending on what the device supports, you may be running into a incompatibility related issue. To confirm, you should refer to your device’s user manual for assistance. Please see below for more details.

Card Type - With various card types available, it's important to make sure you are using one that is supported by your device. For example, some card types include: SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC. Although some devices may support all three card types, older devices may only support one or two. Please check your devices user manual to confirm which card types it supports.

Card Capacity - Along with card types, there is also card capacity. With card capacities ranging from less than 2GB up to 128TB and above, it is important to confirm which capacities are supported by the device in question.

File System - The File System can also cause support related symptoms. With the various card capacities comes different File Systems, such as FAT, NTFS, and exFAT to name a few. Please check your devices user manual to confirm which File Systems are supported. If your card is utilizing an unsupported File System, you may be able to resolve by reformatting the card with a compatible File System.

Question 5

I am being prompted for a password to access my flash card. What is the password?

Accepted Answer

Kingston does not distribute flash media with password protection. This password was either generated by a third party program or by a cell phone. To regain access, use the third party software or the Lock Code assigned to the cell phone.

Question 6

Can I boot from this Kingston flash card, set it as a fixed disk or run an OS from it?

Accepted Answer

No. We do not support our flash cards as bootable devices, fixed disks or something you can run an OS from.

My flash card no longer works in my device or I can no longer view files saved to the card. Can the files on the card be recovered?

Accepted Answer

If you have data on your card that is important to you, we strongly recommend that you use one of the two possible ways for data recovery (see below). For more information on our warranty policy please visit kingston.com/wa

Go to download.com and do a search for data recovery and download one of the many data recovery utilities, which are fairly simple to use. We suggest trying one of the free versions as they work just as well as the paid versions. Please note: If the computer cannot see the drive in question, unfortunately the recovery software will not be able to see the drive and recovery will not be an option with recovery software. Therefore, if the drive is not recognized, please refer to option 2 below.
Contact a company that specializes in data recovery services such as Driver Savers at drivesavers.com and Ontrack at ontrack.com just to name a couple or you can do a search on Google for data recovery.

Question 8

Why is the available storage capacity of my product slightly less than the advertised capacity?

Accepted Answer

This is common for flash storage, whether internal SSD, Flash Card, or external USB storage, and is due in part to a variance in how flash memory vs spinning platter hard drive manufacturers calculate megabyte. Hard drive manufacturers calculate a megabyte (or 1,000x1,000 bytes) as 1,000KBs, whereas the binary calculation for flash-based storage is 1,024KBs.

Example: For a 1TB flash-based storage device, Windows will calculate it as having a capacity of 931.32GB. (1,000,000,000,000÷1,024÷1,024÷1,024=931.32GB).

Furthermore, Kingston reserves some of the listed capacity for formatting (e.g., File Allocation Table) and other functions such as firmware and/or controller-specific information, and thus some of the listed capacity is not available for data storage.

Question 9

What operating systems support exFAT?

The Windows exFAT file system is supported natively on Windows 7 and above and macOS X 10.6.6 and above.
