Systems with 4GB soldered to the motherboard are only upgradeable to 12GB. Only systems with no soldered memory are upgradeable to 16GB.
Faster memory will clock down to run at optimal speed depending on processor model installed.

Although it is physically possible to install more memory, the system will only recognize 12GB (models with 4GB soldered) or 16GB (models with no soldered memory) maximum.
