Young Driver is a pioneering driving school in the UK, dedicated to teaching children and teenagers, aged 4 to 17, how to drive. At first glance, this might seem unconventional, but studies show that early driving education leads to safer drivers with an 80% reduction in accidents. As the largest under-17 driving school globally, Young Driver has delivered over 1.4 million lessons, operating at over 70 venues across the UK with a large team of government approved driving instructors and more than 13 years of experience.

Challenge

Young Driver offers in-car video recording to enhance the learning experience. These recordings allow students to review their lessons, maximising learning benefits and sharing their progress with family and friends. However, the challenge was finding a cost-effective, portable, and reliable recording solution that could work seamlessly across their extensive fleet of vehicles and instructors.

Young Driver needed a solution that could record high-quality split-screen video showing both the road ahead and the driver's actions. Existing solutions, many of which are hardwired and store data on hard drives, lacked the flexibility and ease of use required for their large-scale operation.

Solution

After extensive testing of various options, Young Driver's team selected dashboard-mounted cameras that provide simultaneous recording of the driver and the road ahead. For storage, they chose Kingston’s microSD cards, capable of recording up to 90 minutes of driving tuition. These microSD cards are easily inserted into laptops or tablets for playback, ensuring a user-friendly experience.

More than 30,000 customers every year opt for a recorded video of their lesson. They expect quality, reliability, and ease of use, so we needed a supplier that would offer all of these in a reliable storage product and at a great price. We trialled a lot of suppliers but settled on Kingston as the most robust solution.

Results

The implementation of Kingston microSD cards has significantly benefited Young Driver. They developed a special printed pack for the SD cards, which has been well-received by customers. The quality and reliability of the Kingston microSD cards have led to fewer issues compared to other operators of driving events using more expensive equipment.

Russell Vincent noted, “The Kingston microSD cards are tremendous. We are delighted with the reliability of the Kingston microSD cards. We have looked at other suppliers as part of our purchasing process but have always stuck with Kingston as we value the quality of the product and the excellent customer service.”

Future plans

Looking ahead, Young Driver plans to continue expanding its innovative driving education programme, with ongoing support from Kingston. The reliable performance of Kingston’s microSD cards ensures that Young Driver can maintain high standards of quality and safety in its teaching methods. With the continued partnership, Young Driver aims to create an even safer generation of drivers, equipped with the skills and confidence gained from their comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.
