Why is the available storage capacity of my product slightly less than the advertised capacity?

This is common for flash storage, whether internal SSD or external USB storage. It is due in part to a variance in how flash memory vs spinning platter hard drive manufacturers calculate megabyte. Hard drive manufacturers calculate a megabyte (or 1,000x1,000 bytes) as 1,000KBs, whereas the binary calculation for flash-based storage is 1,024KBs.

Example: For a 1TB flash-based storage device, Windows will calculate it as having a capacity of 931.32GB. (1,000,000,000,000÷1,024÷1,024÷1,024=931.32GB).

Furthermore, Kingston reserves some of the listed capacity for formatting and other functions, such as firmware and/or controller-specific information, and thus some of the listed capacity is not available for data storage.

I use MAC address filtering on my router. When I try setting up the bridge connection and I include the MAC address on the back of the MobileLite reader, the bridge connection does not work. Is there a way to resolve this?

The MobileLite Wireless reader has two Mac addresses: One for LAN and one for WAN for bridging. The MAC address listed on the back of the device is the LAN MAC address and will not be the same as the WAN MAC address.The WAN MAC address is HEX digit (0-9 and A-F) higher than what is on the back of the device.

Can I transfer files between a USB drive, an SD card and the internal storage in the MobileLite Wireless device without having to copy them to the tablet or phone first?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Have both devices plugged in to the MLW and open the app.

1. Select the source device.

2. Tap the tick icon from the menu at the top.

3. Either select the individual files or folders you want to copy or use the option to select all at the bottom.

4. Choose either Copy or Move from the menu at the bottom.

5. Choose your destination folder. A task status bar will appear.

How do I reset the MobileLite Wireless to its default factory settings?

Accepted Answer

There is a reset button next to the power button on the MobileLite Wireless. It can only be accessed by using a paper clip. With the MobileLite Wireless on, press and hold this button for about 15 seconds or until the bridged LED lights up blue. The MobileLite Wireless will reinitiate and be ready for use once the WiFi LED lights up again. Note: This will not delete any data stored on USB/SD/SDC but it will remove any changes to the network ID, password etc.

Question 6

Why does my USB hard drive not work with the Mobilelite Wireless but my USB flash drive does?

Accepted Answer

There a few possible reasons why a hard drive would not be detected. The drive may be using a unsupported format. The hard drive must be formatted in either FAT32, exFAT or NTFS. The Mobilelite Wireless does not support MacOS or Linux formats. The partition type could be GPT. This partition type is usually used only for boot drives and cannot be read by the Mobilelite Wireless. You will need to change the partition type to MBR. You may have some type of security feature enabled on the drive. This could be some type of encryption or password protection software that came with the drive. This must be disabled.

What formats or file systems will the Mobilelite Wireless device detect?

The MobileLite Wireless supports FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT file systems.

What is the maximum storage capacity that the MobileLite Wireless reader will accept?

The MobileLite Wireless reader will support up to 2TB storage devices.

The latest app for the MLWG3 devices does not work on my MLW221 or MLWG2. Why?

Accepted Answer

The Mobilelite Wireless G3 and Pro use a different app to the MLW221 and MLWG2. The New app is called "Mobilelite Wireless". The older app is called "Kingston Mobilelite". Note that the new app will not work on the MLW221 and MLWG2. You still need to use the older app for those. However, the old app will work on the MLWG3.

My network requires that I manually input an IP address or DNS server address. Can I use Ethernet connection on the MLWG2?

Accepted Answer

No. You can only connect the MLWG2 to a network that automatically obtains IP and DNS addresses using DHCP.

The MLWG3 does not appear as a reader like the MLWG2 does. How can I connect my MLWG3 to my computer to transfer files?

Accepted Answer

The MLWG3 wireless network gives you the option to view the contents on the USB/SD storage device connected to the MLWG3 from a computer. Your computer will need to be able to connect to the MLWG3 Wi-Fi network.

Internet Browser

On your computer’s Wi-Fi network settings, connect to the MLWG3 network.
Open a supported internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari).
In the address bar type the MLWG3’s IP address: 192.168.202.254
You can now view/download your saved content.

Share/Map Network Drive

Mac

Connect to the MLWG3 network using your computer’s Wi-Fi network settings.
In the Finder, click Go, and click Connect to Server.
Type the MLWG3’s IP address, 192.168.202.254 and click connect.
Select the volumes that you want to mount (SD_Card1 and/or USB1) and click OK. The USB/SD storage device connected to your MLWG3 is now available in Finder.

Windows

Connect to the MLWG3 network using your computer’s Wi-Fi network settings.
Open File/Windows Explorer, right-click on This PC/Computer and select Map Network Drive.
Select your preferred drive letter, type \192.168.202.254\USB1 or \192.168.202.254\SD_Card1, and click Finish. You will have to repeat the steps to map the other volume, USB1 or SD_Card1. The USB/SD storage device connected to your MLWG3 is now available in File/Windows Explorer.

Question 12

When I try to run the MobileLite Wireless app, I get an error stating &quot;Searching for MobileLite Wireless. The MobileLite Wireless is connected properly.
How do I resolve this?

Accepted Answer

First make sure there is another WiFi connection available besides the MobileLite Wireless and that you are connected to it. Then try the following:

Reveal all running apps and close the MobileLite Wireless app. On iPad or iPhone, double-tap the Home button. Hold down on the MobileLite Wireless App until it has a minus ( - ) in the upper left corner. Pressing and releasing the minus will close the app.
Reboot the MobileLite Wireless device and then go into network settings and make sure the MobileLite Wireless network is selected and connecting.
Press the Home button on your device and open up the MobileLite Wireless app and see if it is detected.
If you're still faced with the problem, the next thing to try is to go into the WiFi Settings of the device and “forget” the MobileLite Wireless network. Refer to the user guide for your device for this.
Go back to the device’s WiFi Settings and try re-joining to the MobileLite Wireless network.
Then try step 3 again.

Can I change the default IP address of MobileLite Wireless?

No. The default static IP address is non-configurable.

For the MLWG3, the IP address is 192.168.202.254

For the MLWG3 Pro, the IP address is 192.168.203.254

After joining the MobileLite Wireless network, I no longer have Internet Access on my device. What could be the problem?

Accepted Answer

MobileLite Wireless is its own wireless network. Joining this network will automatically replace your existing Internet connection, be it your iPad, iPhone, or home/office WiFi network. MobileLite Wireless does offer a bridged network connection which allows you to access the Internet while continuing to stream MobileLite content. This feature basically allows you to “bridge” together two networks.

To do this, connect to MobileLite Wireless network and follow these steps:

Open the MobileLite Wireless App. If you are using Android, choose your MobileLite Wireless from the device list.
Tap the menu icon at the top right corner.
Tap the ‘Settings’ option.
Under ‘Network Connection’, select the network you would use to access the Internet.Note:If the selected network is protected by a password, you will need to supply it here in order for the bridging function to work.
The MobileLite Wireless reader will then reboot. You may need to go into your Wi-Fi settings and reconnect to the MobileLite Wireless network once the reader has rebooted.
Once you’ve connected and authenticated to the network:
a) A ‘tick’ will appear next to the network that you chose to indicate that the bridging function is working properly –and-
b) The bridged LED will light up blue in color.You can now stream content from the MobileLite Wireless network AND access the internet.
